As per a research commissioned by Vision Council of America, of the entire population in US, about 61% of people need some sort of vision correction (eyeglasses, contact lenses, reading glasses). Experts believe that similar figures are true for most countries around the world. Around another 20% people are believed to be active users of Sunglasses, to shield their eyes from sunlight and other bright sources of lights. This makes about 80% of the entire population active or potential users of corrective or cosmetic eyewear.

64% of All Adults in America Wear Prescription Eyeglasses

This qualifies optical / eyewear industry as one with a huge user base. One would expect a whole lot of transparent, easy to use information available in public domain. Yet, ironically enough, for an industry with such massive user base, it is one of the most opaque industries as far as the information about its products go.

A part of the reason is that the industry is still seen as a para-medical field, and as with all things medicine, the complexities are best left to the experts – in this case, the eye care practitioners. Users rarely bother to find out more about the products being recommended to them, or the reasons for the recommendations. The other factor lending it a high degree of opacity is the tendency of the industry to hold its secrets closely guarded. All this, makes the task of the end consumers very cryptic. Now, that’s not how you want to make decisions to buy your eyewear products and services?

We at Planet Vision, would like to change that. We envision bringing transparency into the process of choosing eyewear, sharing our expertise and arming the eyewear users to make informed decisions. We start the process of change by making a small effort to bring out this blog. So, on these pages, we are going to regularly write about topics which are practical, useful and relevant to YOU - the eyewear users. This will cover trends, technologies, brands, products launches and more!

So stay tuned, and ride along!
